221 Congress: GPL recently spoke at the Portland Planning Board in support of new construction just outside of the India Street local historic district and across from the historic Eastern Cemetery, a local Landmark. We noted that this proposal is responsive to its setting, and though taller than nearby buildings, it follows the architectural lines of abutting buildings at its retail base, is contextual in design and materials, and infills a missing block in the urban street wall. We support responsive contemporary design, activation in and around historic neighborhoods, and the creation of housing. After hearing other public comments, mostly in support, and further deliberation, the Board voted in favor of the project.
Climate Action: Historic preservation is climate action and GPL is currently collaborating with a variety of climate efforts. Director of Advocacy, Alison Frazee, is working with a team of environmental advocates to create a network called “Out of Harm’s Way” that will prepare the region for the impacts of climate change, especially flooding. Alison is also part of a state-wide network working to promote deconstruction and salvage efforts and policies. Alison is leading a subgroup that is focusing on training a workforce to safely and efficiently deconstruct buildings, as opposed to mechanical demolition with heavy machinery, so that materials can be salvaged and reused in other buildings. Not only is this one of the best ways to reduce carbon emissions and embrace embodied carbon, but it also reuses old-growth wood and other materials, especially hand-crafted materials, that are no longer available or being produced. These higher-quality materials can be used in restoration projects at historic sites or to add craftsmanship to new construction.
