Custom House: GPL continues our partnership with the Friends of the US Custom House and other interested parties to facilitate the building’s long-term preservation and activation for public benefit should the federal government choose to dispose of the property. We are working to translate our vision into a realistic, market-tested framework through a feasibility study, and to build support for it.
City Manager Danielle West: Kate and Alison had the opportunity to discuss Portland’s preservation needs and priorities with City Manager Danielle West. We had a great conversation about our strategic priorities and areas of advocacy, and where preservation goals and other city goals can be aligned. We learned that in addition to her years of leadership with the City she has an impressive background in land use law and Portland’s historic preservation ordinance, and first-hand knowledge of the opportunities and benefits of creating housing through adaptive reuse. We look forward to a productive ongoing dialogue and future collaboration with the City towards our shared goals.
Middle School Design: Portland Public Schools is launching a districtwide effort called Middle School Design to design and strengthen the middle school experience to better serve students. Because this effort may lead to the closure of schools in historically significant buildings, GPL is paying close attention. If you’re interested in participating, there are three workgroups and a coalition that will be focusing on different issues, though none of them appear to be focusing on reuse of the buildings at this time. The website includes an overview of the history of education in Portland. This fall, GPL is planning to launch a program series focusing on places of education in Portland over time, so stay tuned for dates and details!
Portland in Motion: Fresh off our exhibit and lecture series about the history of transportation in the Portland area, GPL is excited to participate in Portland in Motion, the City’s first comprehensive plan in more than 30 years. The plan will provide a clear and actionable roadmap for improving the mobility of people and goods and consider walking, biking, transit, ferries, freight, and driving as interconnected parts of a single network. It’s critical that all voices, experience, and expertise be at the table to make the best decisions possible for Portland’s urban realm so we encourage you to sign up for updates, attend future events, and advocate for Portland!
