John Calvin Stevens Society leaders support the invaluable advocacy work of Landmarks in sharing and saving the stories of our collective past. These modern philanthropists understand the inherent connection between our built environment and our cultural history, while investing in the sustainable future of our community.

The Society is fittingly named to honor John Calvin Stevens (1855-1940), one of Portland’s most prominent architects. Nearly 100 years ago, Stevens stated that “…a city is not only a place in which to do business, it is also a place in which people are obliged to live and everyone desires to live pleasantly and happily.”

In tribute to, and to better understand our surroundings and be more closely engaged with our neighborhoods, Landmarks offers monthly connection points for our John Calvin Stevens Society leaders.

With cumulative annual support of $1,200 or more*, please be our guest at our monthly leaders’ events. Let’s continue our curiosity for preservation and the implications for today’s world and learn together.

Tuesday, June 27th, 4pm: Casual conversation (including a pizza and beer dinner!) with Nathan Szanton of The Szanton Company on the successes and challenges of building affordable housing, and where preservation and adaptive reuse can play a part in the housing crunch.

PAST EVENTS:

Monday, May 8th, 2023, 4pm: Tour Portland’s oldest neighborhood, India Street, featuring a full sweep of Portland’s history from busy seaport to railroad and industrial center, to today’s dining and tourist destination. Focusing on the heyday of the neighborhood, Landmarks’ Education Manager, Alessa Wylie – and historian extraordinaire – will walk you through the area’s most reinvented street, telling the stories of the diverse immigrants that called it home.
