We are proud to offer unique tours of Portland’s history and built environment through the lens of historic preservation. In addition to our tours of the Portland Observatory we have two other regular tours: The US Custom House and Homes of Portland's Golden Age. We frequently add special, in-depth tours focusing on areas or topics of Greater Portland that need their stories told.  Check our events page to see if we have any coming up.  Sign up for our email list to never miss one again.

Homes of Portland's Golden Age

Custom House Tours

Tour are finished  for the 2017 season.
Tours will begin again Summer 2018.

Elegant Federal mansions, Greek Revival residences, and high style Italianate houses grace this tour of the Spring Street Historic District, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. Let one of our guides take you through this variety of ornate architectural styles as they tell the story of how Portland and its most wealthy residents put their success on display one building at a time.

With its magnificent architecture in the heart of a bustling seaport, The Custom House was recently restored to its 1872 glory.  The building has been closed to the public since 2001 except through this special 30 minute guided tour. Come see the space a young United States of America created to impress merchants from abroad as they came into Portland, one of the country's biggest, busiest and vital harbors at the time.

Self Guided Walking Tour PDFs

In addition to seasonal guided walking tours, Greater Portland Landmarks offers several self-guided walking tours. You can experience these tours through free, downloadable interactive maps here.

To further enrich your experience, review common architectural styles to prepare for your tour.
