    The Advisory Service will visit a house and try to determine the architectural style and the approximate date of construction. They will suggest which features should be preserved and attempt to answer questions about appropriate methods of preservation and restoration. A written report is submitted after the visit.

    John Calvin Stevens: Domestic Architecture 1890-1930 by John Calvin Stevens II and Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr. This book explores four decades of Stevens´ domestic architecture, an eclectic period in which John Calvin Stevens and his son, John Howard Stevens, designed houses ranging from Craftsman and Prairie School summer cottages to Colonial Revival mansions. Forty-seven of these distinctive homes are illustrated by 135 period photographs richly described by the architect´s grandson and the director of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission.

    John Calvin Stevens on the Portland Peninsula 1880-1940: A Listing of his Work by Address, Client, and Chronology by Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr. This illustrated catalogue provides an authoritative guide to locating and documenting the many distinctive homes and buildings which are Stevens´ legacy on the Portland peninsula. Detailed listings include date, scope of work, and location of extant plans. The book includes an overview essay on Stevens´ life and work, and 31 illustrations of residential, commercial, and public buildings.

    Captain Moody and His Observatory by John K. Moulton. Written by John Moulton, a retired mathematics professor and local historian, this book offers a fresh look at the tower after its renovation in 2000. John was a guide at the Portland Observatory for 8 summers and was a wealth of information about this unique structure.

    Maine Outdoor Sculpture Guide was produced by the Maine Arts Commission.  This short guidebook features a variety of works throughout the state, including war monuments and art influenced by the area’s incredible natural landscape.
