Students in the Greater Portland area working to restore the Portland Observatory

There is no mistaking the Observatory on Munjoy Hill in Portland. It is hard to imagine that this area was a cow pasture in 1807, when the Observatory was built.
Notice the brick crosswalk in the foreground. Can you guess why city planners might build a crosswalk in this unusual shape?
