Captain Lemuel Moody

Portrait of Captain Lemuel Moody

Here is a portrait of Captain Moody, reproduced from the fine Observatory exhibit at the Center for Maine History in Portland. Lemuel Moody was responsible for the construction of the Portland Observatory.

Captain Moody built a bowling alley, a banquet hall, and a dance hall next to the Observatory. He was also an artist and a weather forecaster. He kept a record of the temperature and weather every day he ran the Observatory.

Captain Moody was a member of the Portland Marine Society. He became a member in 1796. He was the third person to join.

This is all the information we have about Captain Moody. Do you have any more information about Captain Moody? Write a few lines and send it to us. Be sure to include your first name and the school you are writing from so we can list you in the credits!
