Greater Portland Landmarks’ vision for the Center for Architecture and Preservation is to provide a lively venue for programming and community engagement focused on the built environment. In 2007, GPL identified the Safford House (1858) as an ideal location for the Center. The building is a fine example of Italianate architecture attributed to Charles Alexander, an important mid- 19th century architect. It is sited on a highly-visible corner near the heart of Portland’s arts and cultural district. The interior features beautiful public rooms, which we foresee as program, exhibit, research, and office space, as shown in the artist’s renderings. GPL is raising funds to purchase and restore the building, and to use the first floor as the Center for a broad range of community programs and events.
