Lemuel Moody led the effort to build the Observatory,
and personally staffed it for 39 years.
Architect Francis Fassett designed the original building for the
Portland Hospital, now encompassed in the Maine Medical Center,
along with many other buildings in Portland.
The Phoenix, the emblem of Portland, is a beautiful mythical
bird which symbolizes reborn idealism or hope.
John Calvin Stevens is noted for the extraordinary number of
residences and institutional buildings he designed or remodeled
during his 50 year career as an architect in Portland.
