For more than 40 years, Greater Portland Landmarks has been the most important voice in preservation in Portland. Our work has helped Portland retain much of its great history and distinctive character and set precedents for livable communities around the country. Today, we are at a crossroad. The city is facing rapid development. GPL still plays an important role in preservation, but we have recognized a new and essential opportunity in planning for tomorrow’s landmarks along the waterfront and downtown. Our current projects include encouraging legislative policy changes to retain historic neighborhood schools, promoting sensitive redevelopment of the eastern waterfront, and advocating for exciting architecture and honest new construction that is compatible with historic contexts.
